Darlia are most certainly my favorite band. My friend introduced me to them at some point early last year, and now I can't go a day without listening to them. I'm very pleased with how quickly they've got themselves up in the ranks and how they've even got a spot at Reading and Leeds this year. Well done boys :)
They started in Blackpool in either 2012 or 2013 and realesed their first song in early 2013 - Queen of Hearts
Petals is the first full EP/Album thing they've released and it's an brilliant. I've split the review into a song by song format, each with a score.
1 - Stars are Aligned
A really great start to the album. A fantastic chorus with some really good verse. It;s the kind of song that makes you want to jump around your room really hard. The solo/interlude is excellent and is something that Darlia does really well. Nathan Day's vocals are very good on this song along with Jack and Dave's contribution make it one of the best songs on the album. The riff that the song is written on is a very original riff and adds a lot to the song.
9/10
2- I've never been to Ohio
The intro on this song is very different to other Darlia songs but I like. Nathan's vocals and lyrics are also good and impressive but I feel almost as if the verse is too short. The song is much better live then in the studio. The chorus is very sudden but I like that and the guitar is on top form along with the drums. Again, the interlude is very different to rest of the song and adds to it. I like this song a lot, but I prefer it live as you can get more feel from it live with a massive group of people around you and the amps on full volume.
8/10
3 - Queen of Hearts (2015)
This is a re-recording of Queen of Hearts, a song they released in 2013. This version is a lot better then the original and packs more punch, The jumpy, funky guitar is fantastic. It's a Darlia twist on a Darlia song. If that makes sense. The riff is great and works well with the rest song, The bass on this track is fab. I really like this version.
9/10
4- Candyman
Candyman is my favorite song on the album. It's jumpy, catchy and brilliant. The chords are clean and original along with the lyrics. The bass line is catchy and makes you want to jump around your room whilst playing Candyman at a very loud volume. The guitar also adds a lot to the song. Along with all Darlia lyrics, they are wonderful. They don't have a subject, and they aren't really directed at anything and that's what makes them so great. The solo is also top notch, and really good to improvise on.
10/10
5- Dear Diary
This is the most catchy song by Darlia, It follows a simple 4 chord pattern and is very repetitive, but this works. The chorus is extremely catchy and like most Darlia songs, makes you want to jump up and down around your room. The only downside is that the chorus is repeated several times. Compared to other Darlia songs it's more pop based. The guitar chords are very nice, the sounds Nathan picked work really well with the song and the backing keyboard synths are good. The solo is also very nice.
8/10
6- Say Your Prayers
The "new" song from the album (being the only one that hadn't been realeased in some way before). It's very different from other Darlia song, but it's also very good. It's quite relaxing, the kind of song you can fall asleep to. The lyrics are effective and the slow pace of the song make it one of the best on the album.
